Building a Parent/Child Relationship
Parenting can be tough, and it is different for each parent as well as for each child. A parent/child relationship is necessary in a family dynamic and is very important in a person’s life. Children are very unique and are capable of learning a lot. This is why it is necessary for parents to connect with their children. The more parents can learn to connect with their children the more children can learn to develop through life.
Sometimes in life parents do not get to properly connect with their children. This can happen because of their career, other children, or just being separated for long periods of time. Not having a connection with your children can lead to noncommunication, behavior issues, or just a simple disconnect. This is where family counseling can be helpful because counselors are able to assist with the process of building a healthy parent/child relationship. Having a positive parent/child bond will help build self-esteem, respect, communication and decision-making skills.
Having a Lovable Connection
Connecting with children should be done as a parent, not as a friend. Many parents like to think that the best way to connect with their children is to be their friend instead of being a parent. Being a parent to you child helps your child understand boundaries and authority, so acting like their friend is only helping create confusion and undefined boundaries.
Getting to know what makes your child happy helps create connection. With the assistance of counseling you and your child can learn how ways to interact and connect to build a bond. As a parent appropriate interaction will teach your child how to socialize and communicate not only with you, but others. Playing or being
with your child lets your child know that you are committed to showing them attention as well as showing love through your actions.
Another way of showing care is getting involved. Learn to support your children by helping them with homework or going to a little league game. As a parent you can also show support by planning outings with your child such as a movie, a walk in the park, or dinner at their favorite restaurant. Your child will feel loved and know that you are there to support them.
Staying Connected
A family that can eat together is a family that will continue to meet together. Sitting down and engaging in a conversation with you child create memorable quality time. This also gives time for each person to share their day with each other and talk.
Make your children feel as if they are important in your life. Make time and cherish the moments. Letting them know that they are a priority is key. They will grow up so quickly, so learning to learn them will help keep them close and forever your little one.
