Tackling the stigmas of Depression
One might say that mental health has grown in leaps and bounds when it comes to stigma, and judgments one might get from a diagnosis. Particularly, Georgia ranks as number 34 on a list of states regarding mental health (with #1 being the best and #51 being the worst). Most of these mental health issues which were found in Georgia to put us on the list, were found in the greater Atlanta area, which also includes smaller cities such as Fayetteville, Ga. Common disorders which were found among individuals in the metro Atlanta areas include depression, anxiety, disorders, and addiction. With that being said, seeking help with Depression, or anxiety, or mental health in general, is a common obstacle many Georgians are facing. More and more people are starting to seek out for help with Depression, especially in the greater Atlanta areas. People are starting to realize that these labels don’t necessarily make them “crazy”. So now that you know Depression isn’t something your friends on Facebook will judge you for, and if you’re caught at a therapist’s office by someone you know you can hold your head high. But before you make the plunge and seek out help with depression, how do you know if you are truly depressed?
How do you know when to seek help with Depression?
To put it simply, clinically depressed people usually have issues regarding everyday activities. Those who are depressed are so sad that they find it hard to function on a daily basis. If you are sad every once in a while, but are still able to function in your daily activities, still able to sleep, still able to find enjoyable activities, hobbies, and distractions, odds are, you aren’t clinically depressed, you are simply having a bad couples days. And thats okay! However, those who are really depressed usually have a hard time eating, or find themselves over eating, experiencing issues with sleeping, including sleeping too much or sleeping too little, or finding it hard or pointless to keep up with personal hygiene. For someone who is depressed, simply seeking out help with Depression will be a daunting task in and of itself. Another tell-tale sign of depression is finding activities which were once enjoyable now uninteresting. For example, if you used to love and enjoy putting on your makeup in the morning, and now you just don’t see the point, that could possibly be a red flag. If you used to love to run, train for marathons, and worked out often, and now you can barely leave the couch, you may want to seek out help with Depression from a therapist. If you find yourself thinking that your pet is annoying and bothersome when you once adored your playful pooch, this, along with the other symptoms listed above, could also be a sign of Depression.
