How many of you know about this disease? My guess is not much. Some have heard mention of it but still do not know what it is. In decades past, people believed it only affects Black people whether from African descent or not, but I have news for you now it has infiltrated most races and definitely ethnicity.
Sickle cell anemia is an inherited blood disorder, whereby red blood cells are distorted shaped like a sickle, hence the name. When these red blood cells become sickle it does not function well; it cannot properly distribute oxygen throughout the body. Hence, the body suffers and that is apparent through excruciating pain for those who have it. The pain becomes so bad that hospitalization is needed to control the pain as well as prevent damage to other major organs within the body.
There is so much more to know about this incurable disease, which in recent years is being made known. For many years there have not been any spotlight on the disease though very prevalent. Approximately there are 200,000 babies being born with the disease that has a big effect on the body as well as their life span. I too struggle with the disease so I know what I am talking about.
For those who suffer with the disease I am here to help you cope because i know how much it affects our day-to-day lives. As well as I am calling on all of you to start advocating, spread the word, donate to the cause, join the yearly sickle cell walk. There are different ways to contribute. You can also join singer and actress Jordan Sparks who has also been personally connected to the disease to share your story and join the fight against it through Georgia sickle cell foundation and Generation S to name a few.
Sickle cell patients its time to rise above the disease, be fighters, be a force behind the cause. If you need someone to talk to just to learn how to cope as i have done and is still doing do not hesitate to contact me. “No man is an island, no man stands alone.”
